Europe's lifestyle choices: From preventive health to the FDA Decision on Nicotine Pouches from Sweden

"Prevention is the best investment we can make for our health, our quality of life, and the future of Europe's healthcare systems."

— MEP Stine Bosse

In an exclusive interview at the European Parliament, EPHI representative Adam Schlüssler sits down with MEP Stine Bosse, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Public Health (SANT), to discuss the future of preventive healthcare, healthy ageing, and Europe's evolving public health agenda.

The conversation explores why Europe must move from a reactive healthcare system to a preventive one, focusing on healthier lifestyles, nutrition, physical activity and early diagnosis. MEP Bosse also discusses the importance of public-private partnerships, evidence-based policymaking, and how EU Member States can learn from one another through benchmarking successful health strategies.

A major part of the interview focuses on tobacco harm reduction and the ongoing debate over nicotine alternatives. Adam Schlüssler and MEP Bosse discuss Sweden's smoke-free strategy, the role of nicotine pouches in smoking cessation, and the recent U.S. FDA decision allowing certain nicotine pouches to be marketed as presenting a lower risk than cigarettes. The discussion examines differing regulatory approaches and the need for robust scientific evidence.
