From Cure to Care: MEP Andriukaitis on Preventive Healthcare, Longevity & Europe's Future

"We need to change our paradigm—moving away from treatment and toward promoting healthy capacities."
— MEP Vytenis Andriukaitis

Sitting down for an exclusive interview in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, EPHI representative Adam Schlüssler discussed with MEP Vytenis Andriukaitis how Europe can build healthier, more resilient societies by shifting its focus from treating disease to preventing it.

The discussion explores the findings of EPHI's "Longevity: From Cure to Care" report and the urgent need to transform healthcare systems through prevention, healthy ageing, and lifestyle-focused policies. They examine why prevention must become a shared responsibility across governments, businesses, healthcare providers, and society, while highlighting the economic opportunities of the silver economy and the importance of public-private partnerships.

A central focus of their conversation is the need for a pan-European prevention strategy that integrates health into every sector—from education and agriculture to business and innovation. They also discuss cardiovascular health, digital prevention tools, and evidence-based approaches to harm reduction, emphasizing that long-term investment in prevention is essential for reducing the burden of chronic disease.

Europe is facing rising healthcare costs, demographic change, and increasing pressure on its health systems. Building a healthier future will require a fundamental shift in mindset—placing prevention, healthy longevity, and collaboration at the heart of European policy.

EPHI's Brussels representative
